For companies and organizations, retirement of senior collaborators results in a loss of competencies and know-how that can be irretrievable. Nevertheless, several european studies have shown that few companies or organizations were prepared to keep senior workers in their midst beyond legal retirement age.

For senior workers going on retirement or being pushed to retire, this sometimes brutal departure means a drop in earnings, a change in social identity, quickly followed  by obsolescence of knowledge and know-how.
