Why did we put together the two cards of the day: Shared Workspace and Showcase –
For me, they are constitutive of the work environment, the shared workspace will or will not favour learning, and the showcase is one of the ways to make the history of the organisation, its great figures, its great projects, its best practices, accessible.
Let’s start with an old study which found that the tendency to collaborate (in presence) is inversely correlated to the square of the distance between two people. We know that most of knowledge, know-how and interpersonal skills are acquired in a work situation.
I have personally observed in one of the companies to which I belonged that a simple change of place in the same shared space had immediate effects on intra- and inter-organisational collaboration and on the development of skills.
A tip: If you are a freelancer, get out of your office and regularly spend one or two days in a coworking space. My favourite space is the Westspitze in Tübingen (1)
A definition from the internet:
Definition of showcase 1 : a glazed case, box, or cabinet for displaying and protecting wares in a store or articles in a museum 2 : a setting, occasion, or medium for exhibiting something or someone especially in an attractive or favorable aspect.
I see the value of the showcase in training on several levels beyond the communication objectives of the organisation
– Highlighting what has worked in the company, its recent and past successes (in the logic of positive psychology).
– In the logic of visual management (derived from Japanese quality organisation models) the Showcase provides immediate access to lessons learned, best practices, and the history of the organisation (the last aspect is very important in Germany, to take just one example).
– In the context of Community of Practice activities, such as those organised by the World Bank (2)
